After talking about the post with a few people, we identified one other important comparison.
To be a better golfer, it takes a lot of practice. For those of us to try to improve, you often play different until you have perfected your new swing.
This applies to most improvement processes (Six Sigma, BPM, etc.):
- It takes more time upfront to capture the process and rules and make the improvements.
- You may feel a slight lag until organizationally everyone is on board.
Many companies see the initial "pain" of an upfront investment and lose sight of the long-term benefits. Like golf, once you have optimized the process and moved it to production, you will begin to reap the benefits.
Lesson - Don't forget to spend the time upfront documenting your metrics, talking about your strategy, and investing in the long-term solution.
